Premium residential projects

A look at the last few projects.

We take on six to eight projects a year, by appointment. Considered work, considered scale. A small selection of recent and ongoing.

Hawthorne · 4171 In documentation

New build

Riverfront pavilion home — concept, documentation and material palette resolved across a six-month design phase.

DA approved · Tender stage · March 2026

Ascot · 4007 Completed

Renovation

Heritage Queenslander rear addition — new kitchen and living wing opening to the garden, light pulled deep into the original plan.

Stage 5 sign-off · Photographed · February 2026

Brookfield · 4069 Completed

New build

Acreage residence — the lower-ground vehicle court treated as architecture, not utility. Dressed concrete, integrated lighting, considered detailing.

Handover complete · Awards entry · January 2026

Each project is documented across all stages. Full case studies available on request.

Three disciplines, considered together.

We work across new builds, renovations and heritage restoration — treating each as a single design problem rather than a stack of trades.

01 — Architectural Design

New homes & pavilions

What it is

Custom residential architecture for premium Brisbane sites. Concept, documentation, council approval, contract administration through to handover.

Where it suits

Riverfront and acreage sites where the architecture is the brief. Considered, restrained homes that age well.

Architectural design — full service details

02 — Renovations & Extensions

Reworking what you have

What it is

Major renovations and extensions to existing homes. We resolve plan, light and circulation in equal measure — not just adding rooms.

Where it suits

Mid-century homes, contemporary builds in need of repositioning, and family homes outgrowing their original footprint.

Renovations & extensions — full details

03 — Heritage Restoration

Queenslanders & character homes

What it is

Restoration and sensitive extension of heritage and character homes. Council-savvy, contractor-aware, considerate of original detail.

Where it suits

Pre-1946 Queenslanders, Federation homes, post-war character homes in Brisbane's heritage precincts.

Heritage restoration — full details

Interior architecture, landscape collaboration and bespoke joinery also offered — enquire for project-specific scope.

Three principles that shape every project.

Architecture, done well, is the accumulation of disciplined decisions. Three of them sit at the foundation of every Halden & Co project.

01

The site dictates the design.

Orientation, breeze paths, sun angles, the position of the neighbour’s gable, the slope of the land — the site has already started the design before we open a sketchbook. Our job is to listen to it before deciding what the home wants to be.

02

Plan resolves before form.

A beautiful elevation built on a confused plan is just expensive failure. We resolve how the family will live in the home — daily paths, light, gathering, retreat — before we settle the form. The exterior follows from the interior, never the other way round.

03

Materials should age into the home.

Specifying materials that look beautiful day one is the easy part. We specify materials that age — that take Brisbane’s sun, humidity and tropical rain and become more themselves over twenty years, not less. The home should look better in 2045 than it did in 2025.

From first conversation to handover.

Architecture is a long conversation. We move at the pace the project deserves — never faster, occasionally slower, always considered.

1

Initial conversation

You reach out by email or phone. We have an unhurried half-hour conversation about the site, the brief, the family, and whether we’re the right practice for the project.

2

Site visit & briefing

We visit the site together. We listen more than we talk. The brief takes shape over two or three sessions before any line goes on paper.

3

Concept presentation

Six to eight weeks later, we present concept directions, model-built and tested against the brief. We narrow with you and refine.

4

Documentation through handover

Design development, full documentation, council approval, builder selection, and contract administration through to handover — we stay with the project from first sketch to first dinner in the home.

A practice built around considered residential work.

Halden & Co is a Brisbane architecture practice working on premium residential projects across the city’s established suburbs. We take on six to eight projects a year — small enough that the directors are personally on every site, large enough that the practice has the depth to handle complex documentation, council overlays, and contractor coordination.

Our work is restrained, climate-aware and detail-led. We don’t chase trends or scale. We pick projects where the architecture is the brief and the client values getting it right over getting it fast.

The practice is registered with the Australian Institute of Architects and holds professional indemnity cover appropriate to project scale. References available on request.

Considered work, considered clients.

Selected reflections from clients across Brisbane’s residential pockets. References to specific projects available on request.

“Halden & Co restored our 1920s Queenslander with extraordinary care for the original detail. The new rear extension reads as a continuation of the home, not an addition to it. Twelve months on and the work feels inevitable.”

New Farm · Heritage restoration · Completed 2025

“We approached three practices. Halden & Co were the only ones who came to the site, listened, and asked the right questions before drawing anything. The result speaks for itself — on brief, on budget, on time.”

James T.
Ascot · New build · Completed 2025

“The first concept they showed us was so close to what we’d been trying to articulate for years that we knew immediately. They listened, they tested, they refined. Our home is the better for it.”

Hamilton · Renovation · Completed 2024

“An acreage build with significant complexity — council overlays, structural challenges, and a builder we already had relationships with. Halden & Co coordinated all of it without a single stumble.”

RP
Robert P.
Brookfield · New build · Handover 2024

“Heritage overlay, character precinct, two-storey extension. Most architects told us it couldn’t be done. Halden & Co spent three sessions with council before we lodged. The DA was approved without conditions.”

Bardon · Heritage extension · Completed 2025

“Second project with the practice. Same quality, same considered approach, same deliberate pace. The kind of architects who turn into long-term advisors, not just consultants on a single build.”
